All About Jazz, Glenn Astarita, USA, 2013

Zurich tenor saxophonist Michael Jaeger’s working band, which has become an established name in Switzerland and its neighbouring countries since 2006, is metonymic with markedly creative and progressive European jazz music based on the collective. The KEROUAC band members are a spectacular cast of distinct and well-known exponents of the current Swiss jazz landscape; Vincent Membrez (p), Luca Sisera (b), Lionel Friedli (dr) and Michael Jaeger (ts, cl, comp).

On their third CD "Dance Around in Your Bones", released again by the renowned label Intakt Records in 2013, the band plays a "Collective Pulsational Music": A groove based acoustic Jazzmusic, close to the Avant Garde. From 2006 to 2015 outstanding drummer Norbert Pfammatter was part of KEROUAC: With him the "Collective Pulsational Music" was developped and the first three albums were recorded. Newly Lionel Friedli sits as fourth man for KEROUAC on the drums! He builds since a couple of years with KEROUAC's pianist Vincent Membrez the duo "Qoniak".

Michael Jaeger KEROUAC’s second CD „Outdoors“, was released in 2010. This record enthralled the great American Blue Note saxophonist Greg Osby as well as the somnambulistic Swiss guitarist Philipp Schaufelberger and gave rise to collaboration. Jaeger wrote new tunes for the sextet, which triggered enthusiastic reviews both on a national and an international level.

«Groove is the key – The rhythmical element combines with a kind of magic, at times with the ecstatic, in conjuring up a ritual.

Liner Notes of the CD Dance Around in Your Bones, Bert Noglik, 2013

«This is a jazz album — but a stranger, more post-modern jazz album I have not yet heard - wonderful Music and highly recommended.»

Fanfare Magazine USA, Lynn René Bayley, 2013

KEROUAC has been searching continuously for tonal and musical completion and invited a variety of well-known musicians to join the band. Thus, KEROUAC entered the stage of the Unerhoert! Festival in Zurich 2007 together with the great alto saxophonist Nat Su. It was in Bern in 2009 that KEROUAC met with the great Swiss improviser Urs Leimgruber (saxes) and Philipp Schaufelberger (g). The collaboration with Philipp Schaufelberger was continued and intensified in combination with New York saxophone star Greg Osby during a seven-day European tour in 2010.

KEROUAC’s debut „Erfindungen“ was released by UNIT Records in 2006. Swiss saxophonist Omri Ziegele wrote about this album: „A decent record. One that calls for contemplation and audacity, for reflection and challenging the super-silence in our heads. Let’s hope for more rebelliousness and wilful thoughtfulness. It is a long night – and it needs you guys!“
